The Brief
From award-winning architecture to interiors that match
Alfold Gardens is a landscape-led development of 56 contemporary family homes on a former seven-acre garden centre site in a historic Surrey village. The masterplanning and architecture by Q Developments had already been recognised with a Homes England award — the ambition at site level was clear.
Q Developments came to us after the original layouts and interior specification failed to deliver on what the architecture promised. The original design lacked direction — it didn’t reflect the premium product and lifestyle the development was offering. Our brief was to bring the interior identity into line: improved layouts with better spatial flow, and a specification that feels contemporary, precise, and unapologetically elegant.
The Approach
Layouts Redesigned Around How Families Actually Live
We believe that the floor plan is the single most consequential decision in any residential scheme. At Alfold Gardens, we assessed every house type, with particular attention to the spaces that carry the most weight in a large family home — the living areas, kitchens, bathrooms, and primary suite.
Ground floor — kitchen and living areas reconfigured for proportion and flow
Living spaces and kitchens were reconfigured for proportion and generosity. These are homes designed around the rhythms of family life — cooking, gathering, entertaining. Kitchens were enlarged to accommodate dual refrigeration and substantial island layouts, with improved circulation into the living and dining areas.
Bathrooms were specified to a standard that reflects the calibre of the architecture. In the primary suite, each bathroom features double basins, a walk-in shower, and a freestanding bath — a level of finish we regard as non-negotiable at this price point.
Primary suite — reconceived with walk-in wardrobe and resolved ensuite
The primary suite itself was reconceived as a retreat within the home — a spacious bedroom accompanied by a full walk-in wardrobe and an ensuite that feels resolved, not residual.
Every Room Given the Weight It Deserves
The interior identity was developed to sit with confidence alongside the award-winning architecture — grounded in the Surrey landscape and shaped entirely by how families of this profile actually inhabit a home. Every material, finish, and specification was selected to reinforce the quality of the scheme, not dilute it.
Design concept CGI — kitchen with stone worktops, integrated bar seating and golden hardware
Kitchens were extended to create generous island layouts with integrated bar seating, finished with stone worktops, Belfast sinks, and golden handles — storage was increased throughout to support how families actually use these spaces, with double refrigeration introduced in the larger house types. Living rooms were given the architectural weight they lacked: panelling, coving, and classic fireplaces bring a sense of permanence, while LED lighting recessed into window reveals adds a layer of warmth and detail that lifts each room without competing with the natural light. Classic detailing runs throughout every home — it’s the thread that connects each space and gives the scheme its identity.
Living room and kitchen CGIs — panelling, coving, classic fireplaces and refined material palette
Primary suite CGI — four-poster bed, walk-in wardrobe, considered material palette
Completed Interiors
Completed kitchen and living room — from CGI to reality
Kitchen — stone worktops, herringbone flooring, brass detailing throughout
Primary bathroom and staircase — the specification runs through every detail
The Outcome
The Difference Design Direction Makes
The contrast between the inherited design and the final scheme speaks for itself. Where the original interiors were indistinguishable from standard housebuilder specification, the final design is specific to this development — responsive to the architecture, the setting, and the expectations of the buyer.
It is a clear illustration of the difference between interior design treated as an afterthought and interior design treated as an integral part of the proposition.
